🍃 LAMESURE ESTATE 🍃
During the mid-1800s, Lamesure's cotton estate included the cultivation of Bay trees which were used to make Bay rum, an elixir with many anti-bacterial properties known to cure a myriad of ailments.
🍃 BEST BAY RUM 🍃
This St. John product was considered to be the best Bay rum in the West Indies!
🍃 Many also used it as a tonic to help their hair grow and it was asserted on the best authority that the President-elect of United States of America, Ben Harrison, used Bay rum on his hair that originated from St. John. ~ 1899
🍃 Other agricultural products produced included lemons and limes, the juice of which was harvested for export with some success.
🍃 During the 1920s to 1950s, when the Creque family owned the estates, a large number of cattle were raised and sold by the pound which helped support the laboring families.
Today, many enjoy a refreshing swim after hiking along the coast and exploring the stone ruins still visible on the bay.
