🎨 JAMES MICHAEL NEWELL 🎨
James Newell was one of America's finest painters!
He was best known for his fresco murals and received a coveted gold medal for his work with the Works Progress Administration.
In 1938, he visited the Virgin Islands and recreated this beautiful masterpiece in Washington DC for the Department of the Interior.
This endeavor was due to the efforts of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. It encouraged artists to create beautiful pieces during the years of the Great Depression.
Artists, working under the WPA were asked to produce works related to the "American scene".
This unique notebook is Newell's historic vision of St. Croix's early landscape.
If you're ever in Washington DC, you can find this mural in the Stewart Lee Udall building.
